Over the years sea turtles have cemented a place in our hearts. Is it any wonder that we have 2 days to celebrate and appreciate them! This year, for World Sea Turtle Day we wanted to put a spot light on the Leatherback Turtle!

Leatherback Turtles

Did you know that the leatherback turtle family has roamed the oceans for over 100 million years?! We've collecting together 10 informative bits of information about the amazing leatherback turtles.

10 Informative Facts about Leatherback Turtles:

  1. Leatherback turtles can dive to depths of 4,200 ft.

  2. These are the largest sea turtles on the planet, weighing typically between 600 -  1500 pounds. The biggest leatherback turtle on record weighed 2,019 pounds!

  3. Not only are they the largest sea turtle but they also travel the furthest. Their migration pattern averages out at 3,700 miles each way! 

  4. Leatherback turtles are, unfortunately, in decline. Globally their status on the IUCN red list is Vulnerable, meaning they are vulnerable to to becoming endangered. With some sub-species already being Critically Endangered. 

  5. These turtles are normally found in the tropical temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. Some adult leatherback turtles will even go further North to Canada and Norway. 

  6. Their length is typically between 4 and 6 feet.

  7. The threats to sea turtles include illegal & overharvesting of their eggs, fisheries bycatch, habitat loss and pollution. Learn more here...

  8. Leatherback turtles live for around 45 years. 

  9. These carnivores love to snack on jellyfish, almost exclusively!

  10. These turtles are able to maintain a warm body temperatures in cold water.

  • Learn about sea turtles - Take a moment to learn about the different species of sea turtles and the range of threats that they face.

  • Share the knowledge - Raise awareness, spread the word, tell your friends and family about why sea turtles are so important. 

  • Visit a turtle conservation centre - If you are lucky enough to live near by a turtle conservation centre then we suggest you pay them a visit and see how you can help to support them and sea turtles in your local area.
