Every year on October 8th the world celebrates World Octopus Day! There are many reasons that people find octopuses (yes, that is the correct term for multiple octopus) awesome, but mainly, we think, it is because they are so smart! 

Check out this video of an octopus stealing a fisherman's crabs! 

Octopus Facts That You Might Not Know:

  1. An octopus has 3 hearts!

  2. Common octopuses (octopi) will collect crustacean shells and other objects to construct fortresses, or “gardens,” around their homes.

  3. They have blue blood - their blood is copper based, rather than iron based like ours, which allows them to survive at great depths.

  4. They will eject dark ink that will confuse the predators and give them a chance to escape.

  5. Octopuses are experts at camouflage - they have the ability to change the color of their entire body in three-tenths of a second.

  6. Some octopuses produce very potent toxin that can stun the prey or hurt a man.

  7. Female octopuses can lay up to 150 000 eggs in a week! After hatching, baby octopuses will float short period of time with plankton and then swim back to the bottom of the sea.

  8. An octopus's arm will still react even when severed! 

  9. Male octopuses die after mating.

  10. There are over 300 species of octopus!
