World Octopus Day

Every year on October 8th the world celebrates World Octopus Day! There are many reasons that people find octopuses (yes, that is the correct term for multiple octopus) awesome, but mainly, we think, it is because they are so smart!

Octopus Facts That You Might Not Know:

  1. An octopus has 3 hearts! Two of these hearts are exclusively there to pump the blood beyond the gills and the final heart is to pump the blood to the octopus organs. The third heart actually stops when the octopus swims!

  2. Common octopuses (octopi) will collect crustacean shells and other objects to construct fortresses, or “gardens,” around their homes.

  3. They have blue blood - their blood is copper based, rather than iron based like ours, which allows them to survive at great depths.

  4. They will eject dark ink that will confuse the predators and give them a chance to escape.

  5. Octopuses are experts at camouflage - they have the ability to change the color of their entire body in three-tenths of a second.

  6. Some octopuses produce very potent toxin that can stun the prey or hurt a man.

  7. Female octopuses can lay up to 150 000 eggs in a week! After hatching, baby octopuses will float short period of time with plankton and then swim back to the bottom of the sea.

  8. An octopus's arm will still react even when severed!

  9. Both the male and female octopus will die after mating as their whole purpose in life is to reproduce. The female will die soon after her eggs hatch and the male will die just a few months after mating.

  10. There are over 300 species of octopus!
