The Common Octopus

The Common Octopus

October 8th is World Octopus Day - here are many reasons that people find octopuses so amazing, their intelligence, creativity and fabulous!

The Common Octopus

The common octopus lives for 1 or 2 years and are easily recognised by their large bulbous head and eight distinctive arms. They inhabit tropical and temperate waters and prey on crabs, mollusks and crayfish. These creatures are also incredibly intelligent and skilled at evading and escaping predators.

The octopus can squeeze itself through any hole that is bigger than its beak, as this is the only hard part of its body. This ability combined with its speed when swimming makes it difficult to be caught by most predators! That is, if the predators even see them... Common octopuses are masters of camouflage and hiding in plain sight. They have a network of muscles and pigment cells which means they can instantly match their surroundings in texture, color and pattern.

If by some miracle a predator spots the octopus then they have the ability to expel ink into the water behind them as they speed away to safety. This ink is designed to disorientate the hunter and can even dull their sense of spell, making it harder for them to track the octopus.
