Sandcastle Day 2019

Sandcastle Day 2019 - Saturday August 3rd

A day to head out to the beach for a couple of hours and enjoy building sandcastles! It's a time for families to gather together to create memories and masterpieces, and share in the fun.

So whether you are a talented sculptor or someone who just loves playing with sand, hit the beaches and have a blast building sandcastles!

Sandcastles

Most of us have fond memories from our childhoods of building sandcastles on trips to the beach. Tapping the bucket, just right with your spade to ensure the castle came out smoothly. But where did the sandcastle come from?

Building sandcastles is a form of sand sculpting, a form of art that dates back to prehistoric times. In ancient Egypt it is believed that they created sand sculpture versions of the great pyramids.

In 1897 Philip McCord is credited for building the first sand sculpture. It featured a drowned mother and her baby, and passersby would throw coins as tips to the sculpture. As people discovered that there was money to be made from this form of art it began to take off!
