Plastic Free Christmas

Tis the season to be less wasteful!

Tips for a Plastic Free Holiday Season

The holiday season can be one of the most wasteful with Americans throwing away about 25% more rubbish during the Thanksgiving to New Year's holiday period than any other time of year! Even worse, in the UK an extra 30% of rubbish is produced and discarded throughout the festive period when compared with the rest of the year. To combat this we have compiled a really useful guide to how you can avoid plastic and excess waste this Christmas!

Wrapping Gifts -

  • Some wrapping paper is recyclable, but always check with your local recycling centre to be sure.

  • Avoid wrapping paper with glitter on as this is not biodegradable or recyclable.

  • Opt for brown wrapping paper, if you are unsure of recycling wrapping paper then you could always go for a more 'rustic' option. You can spruce up your wrapping by adding biodegradable/ reusable string or ribbon. Brown paper can be reused and recycled.

  • This year, try and collect your wrapping paper waste and see if any can be reused next year!

    Picking Out Holiday Gifts -

    • The holiday season is a great opportunity to help your friends and family to reduce plastic! Perhaps you have a colleague at work who is always bringing in their single use coffee cups, why not buy them a Reusable Coffee Mug?

    • Be prepared. Planning and advanced preparation is key to reducing the amount of plastic packaging and presents you buy.

    • The less is more principle can also be applied. One well thought out, special gift is just as thoughtful, and often less wasteful, in comparison to lots of little presents.

    • Need a last minute present? Try shopping local, check out a local holiday craft market and support a small business. Shopping in person can help avoid unnecessary plastic and cuts the carbon footprint of the gift you are buying.

    • Homemade can be the most thoughtful gift of all. Bake a batch of cookies or cupcakes and craft your own recyclable boxes to gift to friends and family.

      Decorations -

      • Wait! Don't throw away those old holiday decorations, they can be repurposed. Want to change up your color scheme, simply repaint last years baubles. A little paint can go a long way.

      • Want a more Ocean Friendly option for decorations? Save yourself some cash and try your hand at making your own out of recyclable & biodegradable materials.

          Holiday Feasts -

The holiday feasts are something we look forward to all year round but they can also be quite wasteful.

          • Plan and prepare in advance. Once you know how many people are coming be sure to plan exactly what you are going cook and how much you need. This way you can avoid buying too much and wasting a lot and you can avoid the panicked rush to the shop on Christmas Eve when you realise you've forgotten something (this is usually when you end up with unnesscary plastic packaging).

          • Shop local for your fresh food where you can. Around the holiday season there are often a lot of local markets on, see what they have to offer as you'll be surprised by some of the offers they will have on! Also with many local markets you have the option to bring your own containers to take your food home in so you can avoid the plastic packaging.

          • Here's a controversial tip... Try cutting down on meat this holiday season. We aren't suggesting that you have to give up all meat, however reducing the amount of meat  you consume is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce your impact on the planet.
