Antarctica is the continent found at the bottom of the globe. It is home to an array of marine life, from killer whales to emperor penguins!
In recent years it has been discovered that the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean is teeming with life...
What are the threats to the Antarctic Ocean?
Global Warming - By far the biggest threat to the region is global warming, with some parts of the continent experiencing its effects more than others. Climate change has contributed to the retreating sea ice and the collapse of ice shelves in some areas.
Overfishing & Illegal Fishing - Around the world overfishing has lead to a decline in fish stocks, meaning fisheries are going further afield and fishing more in Antarcticas' waters. This needs to be closely monitored, as the illegal fishing that occurs in the area poses a threat to much of the marine life that rely on the krill.
Marine Pollution - Recently there has been an increase in the amount of micro-plastics being found in the area, along with more plastic pollution washing up on the shores of Antarctica.
What can we do?
There are a number of ways that you can help to protect the Antarctic Ocean...
Reduce your carbon footprint - By reducing your carbon footprint you will lessen your impact on global warming.
Do your research - Don't support unsustainable fishing, know where the fish on your plate has come from and only support sustainable fisheries.
Break free from plastic - The plastic pollution problem spans across the globe, reducing the amount of plastic waste you produce can make an amazing difference.
Sign the petition! - Greenpeace have called on the public to ask our governments to take this problem seriously. They want to create the worlds largest protect area in the Antarctic Ocean.
