What is Ocean Acidification?
Simply put, ocean acidification is when the pH of the ocean is reduced for a long period of time. When carbon dioxide dissolves in the ocean, carbonic acid is formed and this leads to higher acidity in our oceans.
30% of the carbon dioxide that we emit is absorbed by the worlds oceans, and as more CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere, we will continue to see the acidity in our oceans increase. Since we started burning fossil fuels centuries ago the ocean has absorbed around 50% of the carbon dioxide emitted this has caused the chemistry surface of the seawater to change.

What are the effects of Ocean Acidification?
Life in the oceans is at risk due to ocean acidification. Shellfish, such as oysters and clams are affected, their shells are made from calcium carbonate which is weakening and dissolving due to the higher levels of acidity. Some creatures are adapting, they expend a lot of energy to repair and strengthen their shells and as a result they reproduce less and are smaller in size.
This doesn't just stop at shellfish. Ocean acidification has been shown to significantly reduce the ability of reef-building corals to produce their skeletons. This could cause some big, long term problems for the entire oceans ecosystem, as the coral reefs are home to 25% of marine species.
What can be done?
We need to make every effort to reduce our carbon emissions and take the strain off our oceans. Here are some of the ways you can reduce your carbon footprint:
Eating less meat.
Reduce the amount you drive and fly.
Unplug your devices - don't leave them on standby.
Buy local, fewer air-miles on your food = less carbon emission.
Support and adopt clean energies! Solar, wind, hydro, etc.
We are petitioning the leaders of these countries to take a strong stand in the fight against rising CO2 emissions. If something isn't done soon, then the damage done to our oceans could be irreparable.
