On June 5th the world celebrates Environment Day - organised by the UN with the aim of raising awareness for the environment and specific environmental issues. This year, 2019, the focus is Air Pollution!
2019 Theme - Air Pollution
This years theme is Air Pollution and is being hosted by China. There are lots of different forms of air pollution, industrial, household, transport, agriculture, waste and others. There is plenty we can all do to reduce our impact and help to improve the air that we breath.
"The salty oceans can serve as very effective 'green' lungs for cleansing almost any amount of air pollution that we can put in the atmosphere in the foreseeable future..."
- Researcher Daniel Rosenfeld
This doesn't mean we can purely rely on the ocean to clean up the air pollution problem, but it is a sign of hope that if we all make the effort to reduce our NO2 production then we can once again enjoy clean air!
Facts about Air Pollution:
92% of people worldwide don't breathe clean air.
Air pollution costs the global economy $5 trillion every year in welfare costs.
Ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reduce staple crop yields by 26 per cent by 2030.
What you can do to help reduce air pollution...
Recent reports have linked Nitrogen dioxide in air pollution to increased respiratory problems. NO2 comes from a number of different sources including vehicles and factories.
The best way you can take action against air pollution is to reduce the amount of time you spend driving. Even better consider switching to an electric or more environmentally friendly car. Using public transport and walking where possible will greatly help to reduce air pollution.
