Donation to Research on Florida's Red Tide

At the start of August, a number of our customers reached out to us in distress about what was happening on the coast of Florida. We were so touched by this heartbreaking out cry that we dedicated a portion of all sales of the Ocean Helper Baseball Cap to research into the Red Tide Crisis in Florida.

We have gone through all the numbers and, thanks to your support, we have been able to make a $500 donation to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium for their research into the harmful algae bloom.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium Updates:

Mote Marine Laboratory

In their latest news Mote have announced that they are developing a new and more efficient ways to treat manatees exposed to toxic red tide. Read about that here.

Many people have been asking what they can do to help with the Red Tide Crisis in Florida. Here are some ideas from the Mote team for how you can help:

  • Report when you experience respiratory irritation/ see dead fish/ discolored water (all potential indications of Florida red tide), using Mote’s free app CSIC. Since it is also important to know where red tide is not present, please be sure to submit a report even when you DO NOT see signs of red tide.
  • Report distressed sea turtles, dolphins or manatees to wildlife responders. When you do, *be specific* by providing detailed observations of how the animal looks and what it is doing, and take photos and video if possible. Report distressed or deceased wildlife anywhere in Florida to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) – 888-404-3922 – and in Sarasota and Manatee counties call Mote’s Stranding Investigations Program – 941-988-0212. Share these numbers with friends and loved ones who spend time on the coast.
  • To report fish kills, contact the FWC Fish Kill Hotline at 800-636-0511 or submit a report online.
